From Allan Bloom's The Closing of the American Mind:
I have see young people, and older people too, who are good democratic liberals, lovers of piece and gentleness, struck dumb with admiration for individuals threatening or using the most terrible violence for the slightest and tawdriest reasons. They have a sneaking suspicion that they are face to face with men of real commitment, which they themselves lack. And commitment, not truth, is belived to be what counts. Trotsky's and Mao's correction of Marx in calling for a "permanent revolution" takes account of this thirst for the act of revolution, and its appeal lies therein. The radical students of the sixteis called themselves "the movement," unaware that this was also the language used by young Nazis in the thirties ans was the name of a Nazi Journal, Die Bewegung.
Damn dirty hippies. I always new that they were fascists. Who showed me what lay in their black little hearts? Why, Jello Biafra, of course:
"California Uber Alles"
I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president
Carter power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Now it is 1984
Knock knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool neice
Come quitely to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower
Die on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will crack, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
I'm surprised that the now-Green Party (ugh!) activist hasn't come out with a new version of the song as a response to the Recall election. Even if he did, I'm sure that it would be better than the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy's lame cover.
Speaking of Dead Kennedys songs, Venemous Kate posts about Phnom Penh's latest program to get everyone interested in taking a Holiday in Cambodia.
I visited in 1999. Beautiful country. Spectacular architecture. Great curry. And, an atmosphere pregnant with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
This is the best butternut soup recipe ever!I am making it for my sisters kitchen tea. Thank-you for sharing this wonderful recipe - it's simply delicious and will be used in generations to come!
